Children's Mixed Martial Arts:
Making sure your child can protect him/her self is an important lifeskill that can not and should not be undervalued. That is why we teach children how to defend themselves against many things that kids face today such as bullies, sex offenders, and negative peer pressure to take drugs and alcohol. Our realistic program will not only teach your child how to protect themselves, but also about conflict resolution and the appropriate times to use their skills.
This is not your typical "punch and kick in the air" Karate class that you see so much of, this program is Mixed Martial Arts for Kids. We use concepts and techniques from Kickboxing, Jujitsu, Karate, and Weapons training to form a complete martial art for both Self-Defense and Competition! The Defense Institute is the only school in Colorado that offers this unique program.
Competition at The Defense Institute is NOT forms and point sparring. We teach your child the skills needed to compete in both Semi-Contact Kickboxing and Submission Grappling. These training drills give your son / daughter the body contact needed to apply their skills and teaches them about the proper sportsmanship that is severely lacking in today's society. This training results in a big boost to your child's self-confidence and creates an "I am a winner attitude!"
Whatever the age, WE HAVE THE PROGRAM!
This is the starting block for for kids 4 to 6 years old. We concentrate on developing your child's listening and gross motor skills, increasing their fitness level and balance, and having fun while learning the martial arts. This positive, motivational and educational atmosphere will have your child loving every minute of being a Kickin' Kub!
The Small Samurai Program is the next step for kids. Designed for children aged 7 to 10 years old, we focus on fine motor skills and increased self-discipline. At this level you can expect to see improvements in their strength, flexibility, endurance, and physical skills. In the Small Samurai Program we focus on leadership, courtesy, more technique work, and we start formal belt testing.
This program is the beginning stage of being a fully recognized Black Belt. In this 10-13 year old class we work more advanced training for both the Street and Sport. New techniques that weren't previously taught are now introduced and age specific strategies are incorporated into the training. At this level, students are expected to set an example for everyone coming in after them, as well as polish their new skills to a higher level.
This program has a heavy emphasize on Life-skills for the teens aged 14 and up. Whether you are starting off as a new student or you are transitioning in from one of the younger programs, you will see more intensity, self-discipline, and a truly dynamic attitude. We focus heavily on both real world Self-Defense and higher level Competition so the student is ready they can easily transition into one of the adult classes.
Shihan Eric Lalone

Shihan LaLone has 30 years of experience in the martial arts. He has trained all over the nation with a multitude of instructors in the major styles being taught today. He can tell you the strengths and weaknesses of these arts and show you how to incorporate them into your training. He has been a competitor in Muay Thai Kickboxing, Mixed Martial Arts, and Boxing, plus he can train you how to fight dirty in a street altercation. He is a wealth of knowledge!
Eric LaLone began his training in Pontiac, Michigan in 1982. He studied the art of Koei-Kan Karate under the tutelage of Hanshi Inasio Anzures. After dislocating his knee, and undergoing reconstructive surgery, he turned to his Karate training to rehabilitate himself. After his recovery, and a lot of hard work, Eric was appointed as an assistant instructor to Hanshi Anzures. Sensei LaLone earned his first of many black belts in 1991. At that point, he immersed himself in his study of the martial arts as a whole, looking for new and better ways to fight.
In 1992, Sensei LaLone enlisted in the United States Army. While fulfilling his military obligation, Eric again immersed himself in the martial arts. He was studying and teaching for an average of four hours a night, which in turn earned him black belts in both Jujitsu and Kickboxing. At 21 years of age he was considered to be one of the most exciting and knowledgeable instructors in Colorado. He then continued his studies and earned a black belt in Vee Arnis Jujitsu from Professor David James.
