Mixed Martial Arts
The Defense Institute MMA Program will train you to be a winner.  Even if competing is not something you want to do, you'll still learn the skills of a professional fighter, and get into the best shape of your life while doing so.  The class curriculum  is designed so that both men and women of all skill levels are able to participate.  The Mixed Martial Arts Program accommodates beginners, amateurs, and professionals.

All fights start standing up so this is where we begin our training.   We dissect every part of being on our feet to make sure all our students know exactly what to do in every conceivable situation.  Punches, kicks, knees, elbows, movement, and how to move in for the takedown are all covered and applied.
Throws and Takedowns
Once fights go to the ground then you need to be able to use not only striking but your positions and submissions.  This is where your chokes, arm bars, leg locks, and ground and pound become important.  The Defense Institute will take you through every aspect of the ground game and make sure you can finish or escape whatever is thrown your way.

Shihan Eric Lalone
Chief Instructor, The Defense Institute

Shihan LaLone has 30 years of experience in the martial arts. He has trained all over the nation with a multitude of instructors in the major styles being taught today. He can tell you the strengths and weaknesses of these arts and show you how to incorporate them into your training. He has been a competitor in Muay Thai Kickboxing, Mixed Martial Arts, and Boxing, plus he can train you how to fight dirty in a street altercation. He is a wealth of knowledge!

Eric LaLone began his training in Pontiac, Michigan in 1982. He studied the art of Koei-Kan Karate under the tutelage of Hanshi Inasio Anzures. After dislocating his knee, and undergoing reconstructive surgery, he turned to his Karate training to rehabilitate himself. After his recovery, and a lot of hard work, Eric was appointed as an assistant instructor to Hanshi Anzures. Sensei LaLone earned his first of many black belts in 1991. At that point, he immersed himself in his study of the martial arts as a whole, looking for new and better ways to fight.

In 1992, Sensei LaLone enlisted in the United States Army. While fulfilling his military obligation, Eric again immersed himself in the martial arts. He was studying and teaching for an average of four hours a night, which in turn earned him black belts in both Jujitsu and Kickboxing. At 21 years of age he was considered to be one of the most exciting and knowledgeable instructors in Colorado. He then continued his studies and earned a black belt in Vee Arnis Jujitsu from Professor David James.

Following are a few of the major accomplishments of Sensei LaLone:

Creator of the first Mixed Martial Arts for Kids program in the state of Colorado
Developed the Kickin' Kubs and Small Samurais program for kids 4-9 yrs old
USA Martial Arts Hall of Fame member: Children's Anti Abduction Instructor of the year

Shihan LaLone is an extraordinary martial artist and educator. He is capable of teaching how to win in both the ring and the street. LaLone is proficient enough and diverse enough to be able to instruct a five year old their left from their right, or teach hard-core military training to special operators. Whoever you may be, Shihan LaLone will bring you to the peak of greatness in whatever program you want to do.
Most schools have separate days for Boxing, Wrestling, Kickboxing, and Jujitsu.  WHY?  The sport is called Mixed Martial Arts, but it all happens at once.  If you train individual disciplines then you have NO cohesion.   The transitions make all the difference.  Every class we focus on MMA as a whole.  There are certain techniques and strategies that you won't do because there is always the possibility of being taken down, as well as being punched or kicked.  Our program is all encompassing!
What makes our program different from other MMA schools?
On the Ground
This is one of the most important items that you can study.  This is what keeps you going and following your game plan.  You are close enough to strike, but you can also move it down to the ground.  Our program will teach you all the concepts and techniques that your need to dominate in the arena, whether its Judo Throws, Wrestling Takedowns, or just plain Dirty Boxing.
